And he might take George Christensen with him. I hope so as the LNP does not need the far right in the tent.

    Story follows

Cory Bernardi has deleted all of his social media activity on Twitter from last year, as he remains silent on his “massive” plans for the year ahead.

The conservative senator, who reportedly spent the new year travelling on luxury cruiseliner The World as a guest of Gina Rinehart, no longer has any reference to his position as a Liberal senator, or the Liberal Party on his Twitter and Facebook profiles.

He prefers to call himself an Australian Conservative.

His decision to delete his previous Twitter activity has again fuelled speculation that the maverick senator is preparing to quit the Liberal Party.

As revealed in The Australian in December, close allies of Senator Bernardi fear that he may finally split from the Liberals to spearhead his own conservative party, potentially with the financial support of his close friend Ms Rinehart, Australia’s richest woman.

Following the reports, Queensland Nationals MP George Christensen also suggested he may struggle to “stay inside the tent” without a change in direction from Malcolm Turnbull.

Senator Bernardi has said he will be in touch with supporters in late January, but has dismissed the speculation that he will leave the party as “gossip”, while not ruling it out.

He could not be reached for comment.
