Lately, I've been reading Haruki Murakami. Having read several from his pen, my pick, so far, is: 'South of the Border, West of the Sun'. Not a particularly attractive title, but after being impressed by some of his other work, this one had me convinced - he can write, he can engage the reader! Try him and see for yourself. One thing that appeals to me about his style is that not a word is wasted, something inconsequential you read early in the piece will come back with deep meaning later. Excellent novelist.
