The US is currently completely broke, and the world economy has moved on.
The situation is unrecognisable from the glory days of the US, but they haven't been able to accept it.

See how long you stay in power when your population has no shoes, no TVS, no anything really, and your military systems can't be repaired, serviced or replaced.
