Clyde Mountain (en route to Canberra's largest suburb, Bateman's Bay), a 900m descent in the space of 60km or so, has a number of 'Safety Ramps' which are a run-off going up instead of down to use if your brakes are overheating.
I once saw a family having a picnic at the base of one of these ramps. The mind boggles.
