Chachabear, we know Vinva IM are buying up, and if you look at their trading, they're ticking the prices up as they go along... it's a typical pump up the trade, hope like hell someone big swallows and dump the stock into their face at the elevated price. Watch for a big trade at the top... if noone bites, then watch for negative fund outflow from Vinva IM to signal a top (they'll have reduced funds to support the pump). I won't be surprised if a news article about a suitor accompanies the final stage (much like NAB today).
There's no point for a PE firm or another funds management firm to buy out Perpetual, it's been tried before and it always fails at the level in the business chain PPT operates at. Funds of Funds businesses are able to merge successfully, but when you're working at the interface between collecting money (or coercing clients to cough up the money) and money management it's a difficult gig to pull off.
