Thanks for your concern Tango, but don't worry - although I'm still learning, I've been investing in the market for about 43 years, and I've already explained the basics of investing to the kids, and they are aware of the risks involved in mining stocks. They already have an interest in an LIC.
I set some parameters on stock selection to get down to a reasonable number of prospects which were either already in production or close to production, and where I thought there was reasonable chance of substantial capital appreciation before the kids reach adulthood, and then let the kids do the research to make the final selections.
I think that the six stocks which they've picked are reasonably good value at current SP, but if one or two of the stocks fail, that will be part of the learning process. CGT, the company which I previously had the funds in, was one of my spec stocks, and was a fairly high-risk play, and I think the funds are probably safer spread over the kids' stocks!
