I too am not thrilled about the divis HOWEVER, I trust my dividends foregone are being reinvested in increasing capacity via infrastructure investment, commissioning new assets etc. etc.
If she paid me 8% div I'd need a home for my income stream which would probably be (you guessed it ) BHP. This way I just cut out the middlemen such as brokers charging commission, tax man getting a slice etc etc.
I trust that the management of BHP will do far better than 8%pa on my behalf.
Of course this depends on personal circumstances. If you need cashflow you need cashflow.
