It all depends on the type of gold you buy, there are many. With physical gold that is usually true as there are many costs associated with taking delivery of gold (Minting,transport,insurance& storage)these are usually upfront payments and can't be immediately realized. For mine unless you intend to hold this asset for a number of years you are better off with some derivative of physical gold.
