    Wednesday, July 27th 2005
Guyana yesterday signed a US$3.8M bilateral aid agreement with the People's Republic of China and also exchanged notes for the handing over to the Government of Guyana the equipment at the Sanata Textile Mill and for a visit to look at the feasibility of providing new ferries.
This is according to the Government Information Agency (GINA) in a press release yesterday. The aid was provided to the tune of 30 million Yuan ($760M).
Prime Minister Sam Hinds signed the bilateral aid agreement while Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manzoor Nadir signed the two exchange notes. Chinese Vice-Minister of Commerce Liao Xiaoqi signed on behalf of the People's Republic of China.
Two Memoranda of Understanding were also signed: One for the establishment of an Economic Development Zone in Guyana and for petroleum exploration.
The release said that during the visit, the Chinese private sector showed a strong interest in Guyana's timber and bauxite and indicated a desire to visit Guyana to transact business. Also, several top executives from the Chinese private sector, representing hydro-electricity, furniture manufacturers, heavy equipment supplies, importers of Guyana's woods and other training companies met with the Guyanese delegation.
Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Shen Qing who accompanied Hinds said that the visit served to strengthen China/Guyana relations and thanked Guyana for its consistent 'One China Policy'.
On July 17, Hinds and his delegation met with officials from China's National, Provincial and Municipal Governments and several leading private sector companies. Among the officials who Hinds met were the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, Governor of Jaingsu Province Liang Baohua and Vice Mayor of Shanghai Tang Dengjie. Others in the delegation were Yvonne Hinds and Maria Nadir, Foreign Service Officer Cho An Yin and Charge d'Affaires in the Guyana Embassy in Beijing Cecil Pollydore.
