Under the Electoral College system it is possible for Democrats to win the majority of seats yet still have a Republican President if the Electoral College votes that way....this Electoral College system was brought in around 1900 when voting rights were given to 'all citizens'...the powers at the time didnt want 'just anyone' to elect their President so the Electoral College to was introduced to 'maintain control' over election of the President. As mentioned earlier, the Electoral College Reps vote does not have to replicate electoral sentiment - even if a 'landslide' for one party they can vote the other way. I think Al Gore missed office through this system despite overwhelming electoral voter support....
