The one damning feature of charts and chartism is that they cannot accommodate the wildly unforeseen event. To those who are familiar with it, this is a basic axiom of chaos theory. To take an extreme example, no chart in existence could have predicted the stock market plunge produced by the September 11 attacks. By all means use charts when there is nothing unexpected on the horizon, or when the unexpected can be put between certain known limits - otherwise your chart will lead you off the edge of the world.
