I graduated uni and got into a Graduate Project Officer role, being paid within the earnings band you just mentioned. I paid for my first house when I was 23. First home buyers are actually largely exempt from paying stamp duty. In addition, there is a grant (in WA, anyways) of up to $2,000 for FHB, additional to the regular FHB grant, that goes towards the cost of purchasing the house - settlement agent fees, etc. When it was all said and done, it cost me $300 to purchase that property - not exactly an amount that takes five years to save up.
Your anecdotal sob story doesn't add up.
