I saw a TV article on the same matter some time back. Apparently the alcohol produced is the same type used as embalming fluid.

Either way, PASS on the diet anythings containing aspartame.

The article was investigating the way that the licence holder in the US (who I think was Monsanto but don't quote me on that) had gone abput pushing the product registration through the US Food and Drug Administration registration process despite all this information being known at the time.
