Police from the Child Protection Squad in Perth have described the sexual assault of a four-year-old girl as one of the most disturbing cases they have encountered.
A 26-year-old man from Kenwick appeared in court today charged with the aggravated sexual penetration of a child.
He was remanded in custody.
Police will allege the man assaulted the girl while he was babysitting her in her Osborne Park home on Tuesday night.
Authorities were alerted to the case last night when the girl's mother took her to Princess Margaret Hospital.
Detective Senior Sergeant Gordon Fairman from the Child Protection Squad says the girl suffered serious injuries and underwent emergency surgery last night.
"This is one of the most serious offences that we've responded to in recent times," he said.
"I've been involved in this type of investigation for a significant period of time and this is one of the most disturbing cases that I've dealt with, but offences against young children are always upsetting."
