plus my brother in law sold a car to guy in Britain..He sent a cheque and my brother in law 'thank god' had delays getting it on the boat in time...but the cheque bounced so would have sent the car only to end up with 0

The guy in Britain must have spun a good story for your brother in law to send the car before the cheque was cleared!
Either that or your brother in law is very trusting....or foolish.
