Thanks Steve.
The recent NZR/RP deal for SR Aotearoa shows a willingness to work together in this area. Once SL has a seat at the table it could be that they push to use their own platfrom moving forward. Or it could be that RP is the preferred option given NZR is still in control and indirectly own a slice of RP. We just can't really say from this point.
Ultimately, whichever way will generate the best returns will win out. RP has 40M unique visits per month to their news content...so they already reach a lot of rugby fans. I think they have every chance of continuing to work with NZR, and others.
Let's see.
With regards to your 'exclusivity' comment, I am not sure I completely understand.
Sky TV have exclusive rights to broadcast the rugby in NZ. Perhaps you mean, why don't Sky get exclusive rights to the rest of the world?
The NZ, AUS and SA rugby organisations get to negotiate their own local broadcast deals as part of their arrangement with SANZAAR.
SANZAAR negotiate rights in all other countries. RP has deals with SANZAAR in a lot of locations overseas (exclusively), though not in the big markets like the UK as the rights there tend to be very expensive (you are bidding against Sky UK etc).
Which is why the NZR/RP deal for SR NZ was big news for the platform as it is the first time they have had the rights to stream content in some of those big markets.
Not sure if I have really answered your question.
Interestingly, the NZ, SA and AUS rugby organisations get a slice of the broadcasting revenue that SANZAAR are able to negotiate. Some of that money may be baked into the 'broadcasting' line of the NZR income statement.
In which case Sky pays less for the NZ rights than previously assumed, though we can't work out by how much.
If in doubt, use the conservative figures.
