Lamu County is a county in Kenya's former Coast Province. Its county headquarters is Lamu town. The county covers a strip of northeastern coastal mainland and the Lamu Archipelago. Lamu County has a population of 101,539 [1] (2009 census) and its land area is 6,167 km².
Lamu or Lamu Town is a small town on Lamu Island, which in turn is a part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya. Lamu, situated 341 kilometres (212 mi) by road northeast of Mombasa, is the headquarters of Lamu County and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lamu is Kenya's oldest continually inhabited town, and was one of the original Swahili settlements along coastal East Africa, founded in 1370.
