Insider trading occurs when someone or some entity knows something material about a listed company that the rest of the market doesn't and trades on that information. I'm sure it happens everyday on the ASX, but those who actually get caught are far and few between.
Examples would include a mining junior director telling his mate about significant gold hits before they publish the results to market, or a tech company securing a deal with Microsoft, and the reception guy goes and buys stock before it is announced - both of which would drive a stock north once announced to market.
Stocks can move on the pretense that material news is about to be released which is probably what is happening here - but stocks can move up and down for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes the chart takes time to catch upto the fundamentals of the business.
