Many years ago when I worked for BHP and I was thinking of selling my BHP shares to do a house renovation, a manager in our department told me that he believed BHP would soon reach a $100 share price. I listened to some degree and sold some but not all and I now wish I hadn't sold any at all. As you said while the current price isn't near $100, when you look at the value created through sales of assets, demergers and the continuing dividends generated from BHP & the demerged companies we would be well and truly greater than $100 in value. It could have been even better if a few of failures didn't happen (Magma copper, Shale Oil, Billiton etc ) however there are always going to be risks in investing in large mining companies.
