With the Saudis knocking out bucket loads of Oil at $5/bbl and prepared to do if for a lot longer things in the short term are grim on that front. The good news is the pump price will better for us but that is small recompense to the 1000's  of mums and dads wanting dividends from BHP.

    Now as for those dams:
The Samarco operations include a three tiered tailings dam complex. Within this complex, the Fundão dam failed and the downstream Santarém dam has been affected. This resulted in a significant release of mine tailings, flooding the community of Bento Rodrigues and impacting other communities downstream. The third dam in the complex, the Germano dam, is being monitored by Samarco. At this time, there is no confirmation of the causes of the tailings release.

The how to and at what cost it will be to rebuild the dam system and get the beneficiation plant going onsite is probably already know thanks to work done in 2013.

There are enough pictures and videos to show what has happened and with the wet season starting in a few weeks an early start on rebuilding the dam embankments to contain what is still there might be prudent.

The down stream shambles well that is another matter with all that silt, soil and vegetation scattered randomly down stream all the way to the coast. There must be 100's of millions of tonnes churned up soil and tailings in the river and on it's banks and flood plains. We can only hope it can add to the lands fertility and churned in where practical. Silt in the river will make it look crap for a long time so affecting local water supplies.

The town of Mariana is there for the mines and would fade without them so they will want the problem fixed and compensated for and the Mine going again and not shut down.  IMO 2019 in the above report is way to pessimistic for a restart time and have income to pay down debt and to do the restoration work and stave off bankruptcy for the local company which would not be good for Brazil. Going too hard on this is fraught with danger for them as they need all the help they can get for the clean up.
