Unfortunately for the shorters each jump in BHP's price just makes it more irresistable to global investors. It is a funny situation but BHP (unlike dotcom companies with ridiculously high PE ratios) has the resources, earning power, dividend history etc to make each price hike seem justified. And keep in mind that even though BHP is well known in Australia it is not necessarily the case in other parts of the globe (as an investment option). Just manipulate the PE ratios a little on the optimistic side and see what kind of share price you can expect in the near term.
