Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton are facing a backlash from native Indians in Arizona over a plan to build a $US6 billion ($7.6 billion) copper mine on federal land that a local tribe claims is sacred and home to ancient burial grounds.
Hundreds of Indians belonging to the San Carlos Apache Tribe, as well as environmentalists, were set to attend a "spiritual gathering" near the site this weekend, to protest against the so-called "foreign mining companies" constructing North America's largest copper mine.
