let’s say BHP spun out the oil assets to WDS, you receive WDS shares. Price was 1 July $50, post spin out its $45. Share price doesn’t move for the year. Stays at $45 to 30 June. Ignoring dividends here. It would mean bhp’s performance was -10%. But that’s not right, reality was adjusted 0% movement as Wds worth $5 a share in my example, and that is why we adjust. Dividends are also added back for formal performance measurement. But ignoring dividends here.
