mort20: someone who is "long" takes a position in anticipation that the instrument will increase in value....ie: buy BHP @ $24 sell @ $30
someone who takes a short position anticipates the instrument will fall...
ie: sells BHP @ $30 and buys them @ $24
In order to go short you must borrow the stock first...I am sure someone can explain the ins and out of shorting more succinctly than that....and there's other ways as duscussed here
