A lot of majors now looking for some shale gas. The obvious questions is do they stake out their own land, which would mean a lot of work and $$'s and high risk, or take on a JV, lower risk cheaper buy-in price better chance of oil and gas being there as you can look at results before buying in. or Takeover, buy someone small who has product, has potential and ever less risk.
I suspect JV and takeovers would be BHP's preferred path, gives them an immediate fix.
