BHP was one of my initial stocks when I started my own SMSF. I built up to 15,000 shares by both trading and also adding on dips. But I sold my entire holdings when BHP was over $50. I retired and paid off my mortgage, but also I became convinced on Gold. For a while I questioned my decision due to FF franked divs, but Gold has proven to be the right strategy.

Interestingly, BHP is actually one of the biggest gold producers in Aust. But like EVN, one of my biggest gold holdings, it is also marked according to its copper exposure. Like BHP is diversified.

So re your post I agree. I still follow BHP as really love the stock. It is a cash cow! But now I just trade it. A solid stock with basically a guarantee of strong ff divs, but Share price will likely be sideways.
