... Dossnatd, with that kind of money you have to look long and hard in this market before plunging in. We could be in for some nasty times here if the SPX gets below 1257. There is no rush here to get into long positions, the market isn't going to bounce back quickly. If the market goes up in the US tonight, and we have a rally, expect BHP to get back to the $42 area and then fall again. That pattern is now pretty well confirmed and the minimum bottom will be somewhere in $33. It could be a lot lot worse. So as cwliew says, you've got to wait for the clear bottom, which will be something like a double test or rounding bottom, which gives plenty of time to get back in.

Also, put the money in in tranches, not all at once.

But wait, what looks "cheap" today might look like "near the top" in a couple of months time.
