madamswer - given the WPL/BHPP merger is done on net asset values; waiting would not have gained anything for BHPP as WPL's net asset value would have also increased.
all in all the merger is good for both BHP and WPL holders due to synergies and asset diversification. If BHP holders like oil then they can hold onto their WPL shares.
