Otherwise you could purchase $500 worth of shares and then sell all but one. Like you said, they may be sold on your behalf if you are not proactive though.
That might be allowed for sophisticated investor but not the norm… If I wish to hold shares in a particular company I can’t sell shares that will take my holding value below $500.
The only way to hold shares below $500, is if its value drops below that value due to market forces.
Some online brokers will not allow me to buy one, 50 cent share even if I'm prepared to pay a $20 brokerage fee!
