    At the beginning of the 20th Century vast swathes of people lived in squalid conditions - overcrowded, filthy slums. One toilet served an entire street. TB was rampant, along with frequent outbreaks of typhus, scarlet fever, rheumatic fever etc. Bubonic plague even broke out in Sydney at that time thanks to the rat population.

    Sure we are frequently told that life expectancy has increased markedly due to modern medicine, however the figure is distorted due to the high percentage of children and infants who died due to the diseases of squalor. Provided a person survived childhood, most went on to live a 'normal' lifespan.

    Good sanitation has probably been the greatest step forward in maintenance of good health amongst populations, along with financial assistance to the unemployed and elderly.
