he's had a lot of people who care for him and respect him approach him and say they are concerned for him and that they felt it their duty to tell him

personally, I don't consider that stabbing him in the back - in fact, thank god for such people

I've not idea how it works in your preferred world - I don't think I want to know

Even his political enemies are saying good things about him and his integrity etc, but that he's made the right decision to step away
