I doubt they were "fooled" so much as they knew it was BS but were happy to give a Russian-paid operative a stage to defame Biden anyway.
As the Maria Butina episode demonstrated, Republicans willingly welcome Putin's spies and disinformation agents into their party and the parts of government they control with open arms. They both fight under the same Christo-fascist political banner after all.
