    Iron flow battery
Stanwell has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Energy Storage Industries – Asia Pacific (ESI) to establish an iron flow battery pilot project on site adjacent to Stanwell Power Station.
A total of 20 twelve-metre-long batteries have been delivered to the power station to form 1MW/10MWh of energy storage – the first iron flow battery in Australia and the largest in the world. ESI owns the Asia-Pacific licence for the technology created by US-based, Energy Storage Solutions Inc (ESS).
The iron flow battery pilot at SPS will test the viability of iron flow batteries for medium duration energy storage (eight to 12 hours) and confirm the viability of deploying the technology at scale.
The duration makes the batteries ideal for supporting and firming the electricity network during periods of high demand and low renewable energy generation. Iron flow batteries use an environmentally friendly electrolyte solution to store and discharge electrical energy.
Stanwell will acquire the battery once it has been successfully commissioned and is aiming to deliver service and maintenance on the pilot.

That iron flow pilot destined for Stanwell is bigger than the Yadlamalka VFB and *way* bigger than Horizon’s little Invinity VFB trial that VSun is yet to install up in Kununurra.
As you say, other long storage battery types are the other side of the story, and it will take time to see which - either currently in production, or yet to be developed move into the mainstream.

It will be interesting to get the specs on Invinity’s new Mistral VFBand as per VSun’s twitter post the other day it’s good that China seems to have largely settled on vanadium with VSun sharing a Shanghaie Metals Market report on twitter https://x.com/vsunenergy/status/1788787765037117741?s=61&t=PdzkRCrxTzIeOHiqCjoHkw
Sichuan Issues the Country's First Special Policy for Vanadium Battery Industry to Expand New Energy Storage Field]
Recently, the Sichuan Provincial Economic and Information Technology Department and other five departments jointly issued the "Implementation Plan for Promoting the High-quality Development of Vanadium Battery Energy Storage Industry."
This policy is the country's first special policy for the vanadium battery industry.
The "Implementation Plan" proposes to support the widespread application of vanadium batteries in various areas such as energy storage for photovoltaic and wind power generation, peak shaving and frequency modulation of power grids, and energy storage for communication base stations. In terms of strengthening technological innovation, the "Implementation Plan" proposes to establish high-level innovation platforms such as vanadium battery energy storage laboratories and pilot maturing platforms.
In terms of accelerating the development of industrial clusters, the "Implementation Plan" proposes to support Chengdu, Panzhihua, Guangyuan, Neijiang, Leshan, Dazhou, Liangshan, and other regions to focus on key areas such as vanadium battery basic research innovation, vanadium resource development, vanadium electrolyte preparation, vanadium battery stack, and system integration equipment manufacturing

Hopefully the ‘leadership benefits’ gained there will filter through to the West and put vanadium in the same position that lithium currently holds?
(Though iron is not really a mining option over there?)

Thanks for the devil’s advocate post, Pete1952

    cheers
