Miner hopes for Flinders Ranges diamond find

Promising discoveries of diamonds in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia has explorers hoping for a major find when a new drilling project starts today.

Flinders Diamonds plans to sink two wells in the Cradock area near the Springfield basin, north-east of Port Augusta.

Managing director Kevin Wills says while there is nothing to guarantee diamonds will be present in the target area, historical data has pointed to a presence of the gem.

"In the Springfield project near Cradock, over 370 diamonds have been found so far," he said.

"Near Carrieton, some small diamondiferous kimberlites were found in the early 80s, and this is very important and gives us confidence to carry on and do more work."
