The Greenlandic subsoil contains radioactive substances that are often associated with the rare earths. This makes it difficult to work with a complete zero tolerance for radioactive substances.
- We are well aware that there are radioactive elements everywhere in the subsoil, and therefore the work on a law on zero tolerance will also include a limit value as with the previous policy, wrote naalakkersuisoq for raw materials, Naaja Nathanielsen, in a reply to Sermitsiaq back in early May.
May slow down mineral exploration
But setting a limit value for radioactive raw materials is not without problems either, says geologist Ole Christiansen in a recently submitted consultation response on behalf of the Municipality of Kujalleq to the Naalakkersuisut.
In it, Ole Christiansen states that the Naalakkersuisut should consult geologists with commercial experience before introducing a de minimis limit that could possibly slow down mineral exploration elsewhere in the country, for example copper and gold.
