There has been at least one large fish kill in waters offshore from Newcastle and it is belived this was due to a sudden deoxygenation of the water on a large scale.
Possibly some sort of gas release event could have caused this BUT there is another possible explanation in that I seem to remember the local council was experimenting with pouring sewerage into old mine shafts at the time.
Any chemists shed any light on this - does a release of methane/ethane etc cause deoxygenation of saltwater?
