Australian companies have around $US20 billion ($A23 billion) invested insub-Saharan Africa, as of August 2008. Despite the region's low profile in Australia, local companies also have around $A4 billion of projects in development in Africa, with the majority involving mineral and hydrocarbon reserves. Companies engaged in sub-Saharan Africa must be particularly careful to manage their political risk and should be especially aware of the potential for violence and licence cancellation or adjustment.
