Yes, Russia has always been the major rival to the US, which has sought to crush it at every opportunity.
In the early 20th century Russia was a fast-rising superpower rivalling the US in every sphere and was considered the No.1 in education, the sciences, art, music, agriculture, heavy industry, and fast gaining on the US in oil, coal and eclipsing it in gold, diamonds etc.
The elite of the Western world sent their children to Moscow to study as its universities were considered the finest. Russian industry and agricultural output was starting to rival the US.
So the US sent a gang of commies to Moscow to start the 1917 revolution, in a sealed train via Germany. The commies basically destroyed Russia & executed its intelligentsia to help the US become the world's superpower. That took care of the Russian 'threat' to the US for 100 years.
Now however, Russia on the back of its vast resources and the intelligensia that survived is making a huge comeback, and is a or the key factor in world energy, many metals & minerals, military hardware, the leader especially warplanes and rockets, science and much of industry etc. Above all this, Putin has shown up Obama to be the two-faced warmongering hypocrite he is.
Russia is now pushing back against US/EU encirclement.
The bear is pissed off, watch out!
