Qantas Airways and Air New Zealand are taking advantage of their financial strength to upgrade their aircraft fleets and prepare their businesses for a new wave of competition. Both carriers achieved record profits for their fiscal years through June 30. Air New Zealand has enjoyed a longer run of such results and so is further advanced in its fleet modernization program.
