Germany and Tanzania - bilateral relations

Germany is one of Tanzania’s longest standing friends, the relations between both countries are traditionally friendly: through the former colony of Deutsch-Ostafrika which comprised the biggest part of present day Tanzania, both countries share a common history.
Tanzania and Germany share the conviction of enhancing welfare of people in peace and security. In line with the good relations between Germany and Tanzania is Germany’s commitment to the development of Tanzania. Germany  is among Tanzania’s biggest donor countries focussing its technical cooperation on the sectors of health, water and good governance as well as budget support. In all these sectors Germany acts in close coordination and cooperation with its European partners and with international donors. Altogether, Germany has supported the development of Tanzania with about 1,8 billion Euro since 1964.
Germany was a pacemaker in debt cancellation towards Tanzania. It has strongly supported the HIPC initiative of the G-8 aiming at a cancellation of multilateral debts in favour of a poverty reduction scheme in Tanzania. Outstanding bilateral debts of Tanzania to Germany have been written off, making Germany one of the first countries to cancel bilateral debts with Tanzania by 100 %.
Germany is in the top group of trading partners of Tanzania. Tanzania is mainly exporting agricultural products to Germany, while importing mainly machines, chemical products and cars from Germany. Major economic agreements include the trade and economic agreement of 6 September 1962 (without a most favoured nation clause), the shipping protocol of 11 September 1962, the investment protection accord of 30 January 1965 as well as the bilateral airservice  agreement of 17 November 1981, which was renewed on 14 December 2006.
The ties between Tanzanians and Germans are manifold and intense. Every year tens of thousands of Germans travel to Tanzania and experience the touristic highlights of the country such as the many game parks and Zanzibar Island. Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain of nearly 6000 m, is the destination for many German hikers.
Germany promotes the academic training of young Tanzanians by scholarships in Germany as well as in Africa. Germany also maintains a close partnership through Deutsche Welle (DW) with several Tanzanian broadcasting companies. Furthermore, DW broadcasts news and information in Kiswahili, offers training programmes and seminars for journalists and provides high technology equipment for various Tanzanian partner radio stations.
