That was the election where Howard courageously went to the electorate proposing a goods and services tax and the Labor Party campaigned against it knowing full well that it was in the country's interest to implement it. Most of them actually supported it and nobody, not even Rudd or Beazley, has ever since suggested that it should be abandoned.
Howard is the only PM in history to go to the voters promising a new tax - virtually unheard of in the western world.
The Labor Party won (stole?) one election by opposing the GST - your hero Keating "if you don't understand it you can't vote for it" placed the Labor party's interests above that of the nation.
Howard haters can never give Howard his due credit.
