Billion-dollar coal plant mooted for Latrobe Valley

A Vietnamese company is proposing to bankroll a big coal drying plant for Victoria's Latrobe Valley.

The plant is the brainchild of Australian company Environmental Clean Technologies, from Bacchus Marsh, west of Melbourne.

The technology takes brown coal and removes the water and produces pellets with half the weight and four times the energy of coal.

A spokesman for the Australian company, Cos Galtos, says the capital investment could be up to $6 billion.

"They are one of the many companies we've been talking to, they've been the first to move, they're very entrepreneurial in nature and are prepared to put in the full capital required to build the plant starting with two million tonnes of capacity and going up to 20 million tonnes," he said.
