COMMITMENT CONFIRMED: The proposed $8.15 billion Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort planned for Yorkeys Knob in Cairns.
HONG Kong developer Tony Fung has written an open letter to the people of Cairns confirming his commitment to the $8.15 billion Aquis project.
“There has been much speculation in recent months about the future of the project,” Mr Fung said in the letter.
“I want to assure you we remain totally committed to bringing Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort to fruition.
“The Aquis Group has recently taken steps to increase its exposure to the Queensland tourism and property industries. This is in addition to our recent announcement that we are seeking to list Casino Canberra on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX).
“All of these investments, and any future investments, should be seen as reinforcing our commitment to Australia, Queensland and the Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort. In no way do our recent investments diminish our commitment to the Yorkeys Knob project.

“We are currently in the process of negotiating with the Queensland Government on the best way to progress the project.
“We have been very encouraged with our interactions with the new Queensland Government and their attitude to investment has been one of the drivers of our desire to further invest in the State.
“Our team continues to hold positive, productive negotiations with the government and we will hopefully be able to announce some further developments shortly.
“We appreciate the community’s desire to see the project proceed quickly so we can all enjoy the benefits.
“Rest assured we are doing everything possible to bring Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort to reality as soon as possible.
“I believe the Queensland tourism and property industries will continue to go from strength to strength over coming years and we want to be part of that growth.”
Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said the community should be patient.
“I have every confidence the matter is proceeding. I don’t have any doubts,” he said.
Advance Cairns chief executive Mark Matthews said it was “a welcome and positive sign that the Aquis project remains on track”.
Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland president Brett Moller said: “Mr Fung has signalled to Cairns and Far North Queensland – and indeed the globe – that this region is the place to put your feet up, spend your money and achieve return on investment,” he said.
