the 6 o'clock swill at the pub would regularly result in drunken bashing of wife and kids.

today there's still a remnant fear of reporting a husband who bashes to the coppers. and the rights of a man to cross-examine their separated partner is so dangerous and justifies a man's right to dominate and control the woman.

imo its still men who benefit most from family courts.
