Tay-Sachs disease occurs predominantly, but not exclusively, in Jewish children of eastern and central European (Ashkenazi) families. Estimated occurrence in Ashkenazi-Jews in the U.S. is 400 per million births. Each sex is equally affected. About one out of every 27 American Jews carries the Tay-Sachs gene.
