Australia's always had a heavy drinking culture - what would you expect we were colonized by the English! As far as "alcohol fueled violence", going out drinking in Sydney is much safer than it used to be and there is in fact less violence, we just never used to have mass media coverage of every incident.

99.9% of guys go out and drink and do not turn violent, there is a small minority of thugs who go out looking for trouble and quite often find it - alcohol has little to do with it.
