State gives environmental tick to SSDP
The hard work many of our staff have put into gaining environmental approvals for our Southern Seawater Desalination
Project is beginning to pay off. Environment Minister Donna Faragher signed State approvals late last month, meaning that
we’re a step closer to having a second desalination plant up and running for WA.
The approval signals that the WA Government is satisfied that marine and land environmental impacts can be managed
appropriately.
Water Minister Dr Graham Jacobs has said that he is confident the conditions under which we have been given the approvals will
ensure the plant will meet all environmental objectives.
“The WA Government’s environmental approval for the Water Corporation to build and operate the plant and related facilities is a
hugely significant milestone in the development of a project absolutely vital to the ongoing development of WA,” he said.
He also acknowledged that the commissioning of the desalination plant as quickly as possible would enable greater protection of
the Gnangara groundwater system.
There’s still much more work ahead, and our next task will be to gain approval at the Federal level. This approval is currently being
assessed by the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts and should be complete by the middle of this year.
