Victorian-based biotechnology group, BioDiem, is developing a potential vaccine for the avian influenza virus. BioDiem's vaccine for the H5N1 strain is based on a live virus, meaning it can adapt relatively quickly to viral mutations. BioDiem claims its vaccine could be produced faster and could offer broader protection than rival treatments. However, to date in October 2005 the group has not received Australian Government assistance to develop the drug. The Government has provided CSL with approximately $A5 million to speed the development of that group's bird flu vaccine. The H5N1 virus has killed 60 people worldwide over the two years to 2005.
