The original idea of Biofuels was a good one but it has got out of hand. Biofuels were meant to use waste from organic material. To explain biofuels are made from biomass which is organic material, which has stored solar energy from sunlight in the form of chemical in the plants through the process called photosynthesis. Biomass fuels include Agricultural Wastes, Crop Residues, Wood, Woody Wastes & Organic Wastes, Garbage etc.
Like SB2000 points out there are other sources too algal blooms even old tyres etc
However what is happening is that other biomass ie crops of corn and sugar are being used which in turn is resulting in deforestation and escalating crop (and therefore food) prices.
Question is how did this come about? Farmers realising that their crops were now worth more than before (some might say greedy but it may well be needy)? Short-sighted politicians? Take your pick.
So it is not the technology they have wrong it is the source.
