This is very common with any life threatening operation, not just an artificial heart.............I have had two family members who have gone through Heart attacks and by-pass surgery and the psychological shock of cheating death is one factor and the other is the realisation of what has happened and the life style change is enormous, that is what causes the depression and it is especially prevalent in males, women seem to be protected by a couple of factors such as hormones that protect women against heart attack and in mentally being able to cope better in adverse situations than men.

This is not new to the medical profession.
